Mohawk Council of Akwesasne’s, Child and Family Services hosted their 6th Annual Empowering Families Conference. The two-day conference began on Wednesday March 20th, with keynote speaker Melanie Ward presenting throughout the day. The conference began at 8am with free morning snacks and registration. Vaughn Phillips opened the conference with the Thanksgiving Address and gave introduction of presenters. During breaks, participants used their time wisely and networked among each other. Some of the topics discussed on Day One of the Conference were on: compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma, PTSD, grief, suicide warnings, drug problems and self-care.

Day Two was filled with plenty of new information from keynote speaker Melanie Ward for most of the morning. Ward went on to give an emotional and heartfelt speech during her second day. The second day was also filled with uplifting topics and discussions about time management, forgiveness, self-esteem and self-worth. Participants had the opportunity to network and talk during some in depth interactive discussions.

During lunch, Don Burnstick made his presence known to everyone in attendance. The long awaited and anticipated Burnstick lightened up the mood. Burnstick is a renowned Onkwehonwe comedian who also has little life lessons weaved into his jokes. He can make you laugh about something that would normally make someone else cry. Burnstick did not disappoint, even though he has made several appearances in Akwesasne, he can still make a crowded room full of Mohawks laugh until they cry.

Community members were fortunate enough to be able to attend this two-day conference for free with organizer, Danielle Oakes stated "I invite you all to next year’s conference."

So, if you did not get a chance to attend any of the previous conferences by Akwesasne Child and Family Services, you will have an opportunity to attend next year’s 7th Annual Empowering Families Conference.
